So last week in my post about the annual ceramics market, I mentioned Way of the Wyrd, a Border Morris dance group.
I recently
paid a visit to Compton Verney, partly because it is relatively close to us, and I’d never been before, and
partly because I had become aware that they were hosting what sounded like a
very interesting exhibition on British folk costumes. Well, the place didn’t disappoint,
and there was so much to see, from the lovely gardens, through the regular
museum displays of rural life, a surprise photo of Daniel Lambert, a display of
Tudor paintings, and the special exhibition I’d really gone to see. Oh, and the
café was absolutely fabulous too!
Anyway, having looked around at most things, I eventually ended up in the ‘Making mischief:folk costume in Britain exhibition', where I did my usual excited shriek (see blogpost on Burleigh Hall and visit to Blenheim Palace for a similar reaction!) as I was astounded that the first thing that confronted me in the exhibition hall was a miniature figure dressed in a Way of the Wyrd costume! There were in fact many little figures dressed in a variety of costumes from across the UK, as well as a wonderful collection of life-sized figures, also dressed in different costumes.
Way of the Wyrd have quite a range of dances that they perform, and they do have a couple of Loughborough-specific ones, like the Loughborough Sockman Dance, and Ned Ludd. So, here are some photos of Way of the Wyrd in action, firstly at the Picnic in the Park 2017

I wonder where they’ll pop up next!
