31 Days of Graves Day 7 Repaired

Looking around our local cemeteries, there are plenty of broken graves, either standing upright, or having been laid down to avoid them falling, but finding a grave that’s been repaired, as opposed to having been put upright again after having been laid flat, proved difficult.

I have only one repaired headstone to share with you, which I found in the old cemetery on Leicester Road.

Julia Elizabeth Cartwright was baptised at All Saints church in Loughborough on 1 September 1867. Her parents were Zachariah and Ellen. Julia Elizabeth’s husband, Joseph Smalley, was born in Shepshed on 23 November 1869, and the couple married in Birmingham in 1890. They had two children: Hylda Margaret was born in Loughborough on 20 January 1891, and Bertram Joseph in Loughborough in 1897.

Joseph was a tobacconist on Nottingham Road for some years, but by 1921 had moved to Snells Nook, where he ran a farm. By 1939 he was living in a bungalow, probably called Byeways, next door to The Nook on Snells Nook Lane, and working as an estate gardener’s assistant. Joseph died on 7 March 1957.

However, the headstone that has been gently repaired commemorates Julia Elizabeth Smalley, and her daughter Hylda Margaret, who had married John Bertram Simpkin in 1912, although he predeceased her by nine years. Here’s the inscription:

In memory ever dear

Of

Julia Elizabeth Smalley

July 2nd 1932

‘Beloved’

And

Hylda Margaret Simpkin

Died 30th November 1963

At the base of the cross are some lovely flowers. The cross itself is the part that has been repaired.

Thank you for reading this blogpost. Check back again tomorrow for another day of graves.
